UK needs 250,000 extra construction workers by 2028

CITB’s Construction Skills Network 2024-28 report has revealed that the UK’s construction output rose by 2% in 2023, the third consecutive year of growth.

This rate will continue to rise by an average of 2.4% a year between now and 2028.

To meet this surge in demand, the UK will require more than 251,500 additional construction workers over the next five years.

This will lead to a significant growth in construction employment, projected to reach 2.75 million by 2028.

The major opportunities are in private housing, infrastructure, and repair and maintenance.

Rising Interest in Construction Careers Amongst Young People

The Careers & Enterprise Company (CEC) and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) have reported growing interest in construction careers among young people in the UK, which is promising for addressing the industry's skills shortage.

A CEC survey of 100,000 young people found that construction is a preferred career choice by age 11, alongside creative and media, healthcare, business and finance, and engineering. This trend reflects increased outreach by firms like Mace, Willmott Dixon, Morgan Sindall, and Wates, who are visiting schools, raising awareness, and developing apprenticeship programmes.

Early Engagement Benefits Construction Firms

Construction companies see clear benefits in engaging with schools and colleges. The CEC found that 97% of firms reported that such efforts encourage young people to consider construction careers.

Furthermore, 87% said this approach helps close skills gaps, 84% noted better workforce diversity, and 94% reported improved recruitment for jobs and apprenticeships, demonstrating the value of early outreach.
